How to Prepare for a Visit to the Abortion Clinic

One in every pregnancy across the globe ends in abortion. It is a common experience for women in the first trimester of their pregnancy. However, first-time patients looking for termination may feel overwhelmed by the lack of information about this procedure.

Since legal abortion is one of the safest and effective ways to terminate pregnancies, women should have a solid understanding of this process. They need to know what to do before or after, along with recovery steps.

Below are some tips one can follow to prepare for their abortion clinic appointment.

Types to Know

There are two types of abortion procedure: medication and aspiration. Women can choose between these types based on their medical condition and comfort level. In most cases, doctors will help them decide by suggesting several options.

Medication

In this process, pregnant women have to swallow abortion pills. It can be performed for patients who are at the early stages of their pregnancy. They need to take two sets of medication – one at the clinic and another one at home. Once done, patients must attend follow-up consultations for a week or two.

Aspiration

Better known as surgical abortion, this process involves removing the contents of the uterus. It is done for late pregnancies in most cases. This procedure takes about five to ten minutes, depending on the conditions. Patients get anesthetic to deal with pain and cramping. There are no severe complications in surgical procedures. It has about a 99% success rate.
